Umbrellas For All Seasons

by Josephine Archibald

An umbrella, also known as a parasol, is known to have other names such as the gamp, the brolly, the umbrellery, and even the bumbershoot and is described as a canopy designed to shield against raindrops or heavy rain, or sunlight. The word parasol frequently refers to an item that is used to shield one from the harsh glare of the sun, and the umbrella is more suited to protect one from rain.

As mentioned above, one of the major uses of umbrellas is to spare us from the torments of the hot sun. One common example for this is the patio umbrella, what’s nice about it is that you can customize one to go with your backyard motif. You can select from an array of colors listed below.

Some parasols are not water-resistant, hence, if used to shield one from rain, the item gets wet. Parasols are sometimes used with patio tables or other outdoor furniture. On the other hand, umbrellas are almost exclusively hand-held and easy to carry and put inside your bags, but this doesnt mean though that parasols can not be hand-held, because most times, they are also made to be portable and hand held.

Umbrella is from the Latin word umbra, taken from the Ancient Greek word mbros, which means to shade or shadow. The term brolly is a slang word for umbrella, and you would often hear this term used in Britain, in Australia, in South Africa, and in New Zealand.

3. Yellow - this color symbolizes exuberance. Perfect to remind you that a clear day will follow a dark, rainy one. Yellow is for sunflowers and the richness of Spring and Summer.

4. Clear - rain can be really depressing at times, but it actually becomes amusing to watch through a transparent umbrella. Being under it without getting wet is really something worth experiencing; it gives us a genuine being-one-with-nature feel.

A red umbrella means passion and joy, happiness and enthusiasm. Once a person sees a red umbrella, one tends to feel delightedly cheerful and confident. It somehow gives an impression of the rain and dreary weather ending soon.A yellow umbrella means sunshine. So should one see a yellow umbrella, one would feel optimistic despite the dismal and bleak rainy weather. With a yellow umbrella at hand, a bubbly feeling of having this weather picking up, and possibly seeing the sun in the hours following would be a positive thought.

Did you know that so many countries feature the umbrella as part of their history? In the Middle East, the parasol is frequently included in the Nineveh. As noted in one of their sculptures, an attendant would be holding a parasol over the head of a King on his chariot.

In Egypt, there were several types of items that would constitute a parasol. One time it would be noted that a flagellum, or a fan of palm leaves or colored leaves with a long stick is used to protect the princess. At times, a parasol would be seen in ancient drawings held over a figure of a god who is being carried on a procession.
