Watch Movies Online Like Tropic Thunder
If you haven’t seen it yet, Tropic Thunder was actually one of the better comedies of the year. We know, we know, how could it be, right? It stars Ben Stiller, who’s been making nothing but bad comedies lately, and Jack Black, who’s one note act is getting stale. But… These guys are actually firing on all cylinders again, here. This is a script they actually seem to enjoy being a part of, they’re not just spitting out lines that you can just tell they don’t find funny, and it really is one of the top must watch movies online.
The movie is really all about spoofing modern Hollywood culture and phoniness and the concept of what’s real and what’s not keeps recurring throughout the film. This is made clear in the opening where we see a series of fake trailers showing what sort of films the main characters usually star in. The best of these is probably Jack Black using fat suits to spoof Eddie Murphy’s recent films.
As you probably know, the story revolves around a group of actors who are led to believe that they’re going through a rigorous survival training routine for the film and wind up in over their heads when the situation gets a little too real. This really works with the theme of the film being sincerity and fakeness, and the fact that a fake situation becomes real is an incredible premise, everything considered.
So what it really comes down to is the idea of reality. You can be who you want to be in life, but only if you get over your ego and stop trying to live based on the standards others place on you. The film is layered in irony as we see the characters playing characters playing characters, there are a lot of layers of falseness going on.
It’s a very funny film, too, of course, but it’s also a moving and dramatic film, as well as an exciting one. The movie is really more than you’d expect from Ben Stiller these days, who seems content to just collect big paychecks for big budget movies with low mileage jokes. This one is actually one of his very best, though.
The action in the film is really interesting, offering a new dynamic that we haven’t seen in films before. The characters are carrying prop rifles with blank rounds, so there’s really a whole new dynamic in that only one side of the gunfight is actually shooting live rounds. Again, this comes back to the theme of “faking it”.
Be on the lookout for one of the greatest cameos of all time, and don’t look at the cast listing on imdb until you’ve figured it out for yourself. When he first appears, you’ll be thinking “That guy looks familiar, who is that?” Then you’ll wind up saying to yourself “Could it be? Nah, that’s not… Wait a minute! I KNOW WHO THAT IS!” Figuring out the cameo is the biggest laugh of the movie, really.
If you want a movie with a lot of laughs, a lot of action, and its heart in the right place, Tropic Thunder is one of the better films out there today in that regard, and it’s definitely worth a try if you’d like to see Ben Stiller prove to the world that he can still be pretty funny, when he wants to be, that is.
