Windchimes; A Landscape Of Calming Melodies

Windchimes are often found in gardens or hanging from the eaves of houses. They impart a lovely sound to the atmosphere that can be calming. Some windchimes are tuned to play music while others have random tinkling tones. They are made of many materials and you can find one that will please your senses without any trouble at all.

Windchimes were used during the prehistoric era and it is not really known what they were used for. They could have been a warning mechanism to tell the prehistoric people against intruders or they could have been measuring the wind. They also could have just liked the sound. A set of windchimes were dug up at an archaeological dig in South East Asia somewhere around 3000 BC. These windchimes were made of materials that could be found around the area. They used bamboo, wood, stones, shell and most often bones.

The Buddhists in Asia were the ones who developed windchimes to the fullest mostly because they used them in ceremonies. They hung windchimes to the rooftops of pagodas and temples that would ring deliriously whenever the wind came through. In Asia and the Mediterranean people believed that the windchimes would call to good spirits and they would come to protect the people who put them up. It was also believed that windchimes would keep evil spirits at bay. You can find windchimes on many residences in China and Japan the owners hoping the good spirits will protect them. In other cultures it is believed that windchimes will make you have good luck.

he people of the ancient Celtic nations did not use windchimes to calm the soul. They placed them in the woods and around villages to deceive their adversaries. The Celts were a very superstitious people and the enemy would hear the sounds the chimes made, think the area was haunted and high tailed it far away.

It is believed that the tones of windchimes can calm the mind. It is also believed that the sound a chime produces can even heal the body and distraught mind because of the resonance and frequency at which it rings. They are supposed to bring self awareness and help to connect with soul or spirit of a person. The sound is said to relax individuals and cause anger to melt away bringing an inner balance. Feng Shui utilizes windchimes in order to bring balance to ones life and home.

In the past farmers used windchimes in order to tell what kind of weather would affect the crops that day. Some wind directions bring about specific weather conditions so if the wind was blowing a certain way farmers new there was going to be rain that day. The windchimes would let them know which way the wind, or weather, was going. They would set up several sets of windchimes so they could hear the direction of the wind. They could also tell the wind speed by the tone of the chimes. Some farmers used them for another reason entirely. They were used to scare birds away that would normally decimate a crop.

Windchimes are still a good seller even today. They are made from hanging the chimes from string. Some of the chimes are made of metal rods or tubes and some are made of glass or even seashells. Bamboo windchimes are very popular and give a clinking sound rather than a chime. Some of the metal chimes have a central string hanging down with a metal or wooden ball or disk at the bottom. The chimes hit that ball or disk when the wind blows and causes them to sound. There are other windchimes where the chimes are positioned in a row and they bump into each other and make sounds.

It really does not matter why windchimes are placed on houses or in gardens today. They probably are not there to tell the weather or scare away the birds or even to scare away bad spirits. They do, however, exude an atmosphere of pleasure and calmness and tend to relax the mind of those who hear it. They are just as popular today as they have been in the past and can be found just about anywhere. They are made of metal, glass, wood, bamboo, shells and other substances that make a pleasant sound when suspended and gently bounced of one another. Maybe they do bring good luck or good spirits because every time you hear them, you smile.
